Ntungamo, Uganda – On Thursday, authorities in Ntungamo District officially commissioned a 24,000-litre rainwater harvesting ferro-cement tank at Rubaare Secondary School, in an initiative aimed at enhancing access to clean and safe water for students.
The commissioning was led by Ntungamo Resident District Commissioner Isaiah Byarugaba Kanyamahane, who called on the school’s administration and students to ensure the facility is well maintained and used effectively.
“This tank is here to provide reliable access to clean water. It is your responsibility to ensure it is cared for and used properly so it can benefit many more to come,” Kanyamahane stated.
Bibiana Kakinoni, the Secretary for Health and Social Services, who represented District Chairperson Samuel Rwakigooba, reaffirmed the district’s dedication to improving access to clean water for all residents.
“Our goal as a district is to ensure every citizen, especially learners, has access to safe water,” Kakinoni said.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief Administrative Officer, Shallong Birungi highlighted Rubaare Secondary School’s longstanding role in national development through education and pledged continued district support.
Ntungamo District Water Engineer Prosper Butubuura disclosed that the tank, built by Alice Trading Company Limited at a cost of UGX 17 million, is expected to significantly ease the school’s water challenges.
“This facility is a long-term investment in both health and education. It will ensure consistent water supply for learners and staff,” Butubuura explained.
The school’s headteacher, Monica Mpeirwe, thanked the district for the support, noting that the school had previously spent heavily on water bills.
“This tank will greatly reduce our water costs and help improve hygiene and sanitation at the school,” Mpeirwe said.
In addition to the Rubaare Secondary School tank, the same delegation commissioned two other ferro-cement water tanks—one at St. Peter’s Vocational Secondary School in Bwizibwera, Rugarama Sub-county, and another at Nyamurindira Church of Uganda in Rubaare. They also inaugurated a protected spring in Akatojo Village, Rubaare Sub-county.
Rev. Fr. Peter Arinaitwe, the parish priest of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Bwizibwera, commended the government for prioritizing access to clean water in local communities.
“These initiatives show that the government is taking real steps to meet the essential needs of its people,” he said.
The day’s events reflect Ntungamo District’s ongoing commitment to promoting water security and improving public health in both educational and community settings.
