Government Donates Forage Choppers to Boost Livestock Farming in Ntungamo

By Anthony Kushaba

Ntungamo, Uganda — In a significant boost to livestock farming, the government of Uganda has donated modern motorized forage choppers to 11 farmers in Ntungamo District.

According to Dr. Yaake Basulira, the Ntungamo District Veterinary Officer, the equipment is intended to enhance animal feeding practices, ultimately increasing milk production and supporting commercial livestock farming.

Dr. Basulira explained that the initiative is part of the Agricultural Value Chain Development Program, which aims to empower farmers engaged in commercial agriculture to improve productivity through better feeding techniques.

“The choppers were received last week and officially handed over to the selected beneficiaries on Monday,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Alex Twebaze, welcomed the donation, describing it as timely. He noted that farmers have long faced challenges in manually chopping grass, which is both labor-intensive and time-consuming.

“These modern forage choppers are a game-changer,” Twebaze said. “They are adjustable, efficient, and allow us to cut grass to various sizes depending on the type of feed required.”

Ntungamo district local council five chairperson Samuel Muchunguzi Rwakigooba told our reporter that the donation is expected to reduce the workload for farmers and increase efficiency in feed preparation, contributing to improved animal health and higher dairy yields in the district.

He commended government for deliberately moving in to boost agricultural mechanization.
